Sometimes Non-Hollywood People Think Hollywood is More Hollywood Than Hollywood Is

I just interviewed The White Lotus star Walton Goggins for a British magazine which is called “You” despite the fact that that’s not who reads it. It’s inserted into The Daily Mail, and the editors are lovely British people.

When they nervously emailed me immediately after my lunch with Goggins to see how it went, I cockily sent them the lede I jotted down. I expected them to immediately wire me thousands of pounds in bonus money, which is typical in industries that are not journalism. Instead they asked me for a new lede.

I wrote one, but I was confused. Because it was a great lede. Not because of my writing, but because of what happened. Which they cut from the article entirely.
